Children in KS1 have many opportunities to develop their reading skills which include:
Marriott Primary School is also a Reading Recovery school. Reading Recovery is an intensive programme to support six year olds who find reading challenging. A trained Reading Recovery teacher works with particular children for 30 minutes a day for up to 20 weeks to ensure they become able to read at the same level as their classmates, or at the very least, make accelerated progress. At Marriott, a large number of staff are also trained to deliver Better Reading and Writing Partnerships (BRWP). This is a reading intervention based on Reading Recovery principles, but it is less intensive.

Spelling and Grammar
Spelling and grammar are an extremely important part of the KS1 curriculum. Grammar is taught daily and followed with an opportunity to apply their skills. This includes understanding a wide range of punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks, questions marks, commas and apostrophes), knowing how to identify and write different types of sentences (statements, questions, exclamations and commands) and understanding different types of words and how they are used (adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions etc). Phonics or spelling are also taught daily and cover the wide range of spelling rules expected by the end of KS1. Spellings are sent home and tested weekly but an emphasis is also placed on applying these spellings within the context of children’s written work.
We are now teaching Singapore Maths across the school from year 1 to year 6. You can visit the ‘Maths No Problem’ website to find out more.
