Writing

At Marriott Primary School, we believe that strong writing skills develop through creativity, confidence and secure foundations. Writing is taught through a clear, structured approach that supports all learners and helps children see writing as meaningful and achievable.

Lessons follow a three-phase sequence. Children are first immersed in an engaging stimulus such as a story, image, video or real-life experience. This sparks imagination and gives a clear purpose for writing. Next, pupils explore language through carefully planned activities that develop vocabulary, sentence structure and grammar. Finally, children apply these skills in a focused writing task with a clear audience and purpose.

We place great importance on sentence-level work, spelling and handwriting. Quality is always prioritised over quantity, allowing children to build confidence and accuracy. Regular feedback supports children in developing key foundational skills.

Some pupils receive additional support through targeted writing sessions, which focus on phonics, spelling and sentence construction. This ensures every child can make progress at their own pace.

Spelling is taught using the Spelling Shed programme, and handwriting is practised daily to ensure correct letter formation. Through this consistent approach, we aim to develop confident, capable and enthusiastic writers.
