Early Years Foundation Stage

At Marriott Primary School, our Early Years curriculum builds on children’s previous learning and experiences from home and, where relevant, pre-school settings. We recognise that every child is unique, and we value and celebrate the diversity within our school community. We aim for every child’s first experience of school to be happy, memorable and inspiring, setting a positive tone for their learning journey.

We provide a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum that supports children’s emotional, social, physical and intellectual development, helping them to reach their full potential. Our topic-based approach makes learning meaningful and exciting, while developing vocabulary, strengthening understanding and supporting each child’s next steps.

We follow the White Rose Maths programme to develop early number sense, alongside a structured phonics programme (ALS) to support early reading and writing skills. Our teaching is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, which promotes school readiness and provides children with the essential knowledge and skills for future learning and life.

Children learn through a rich and progressive curriculum based on the seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Physical Development

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Our weekly planning is based around engaging themes and high-quality stories, helping to maximise language development and deepen learning. We place great importance on learning through play, with a balance of indoor and outdoor experiences that encourage curiosity, exploration and independence.
